Knowing how your KiwiSaver is performing, and how that compares with other funds, takes more than a quick look at your balance. A fair comparison uses returns after fees, within the same fund type, over the same period: how to do that is in the KiwiSaver fund performance comparison.
Returns by Fund Type
Five-year after-fee returns differ by fund type (growth funds have returned more than conservative funds over the current window) and by provider within each type. The tables by fund type and provider, with each figure’s source and date, are in KiwiSaver fund returns.
Average KiwiSaver Balance by Age
Average balances rise with age through the working years, and the average is well above what many members hold: just under half of the members in the balance bands of the MJW KiwiSaver Demographic Study (data to December 2025) have less than $20,000, against an overall average of $41,286. The figures by age group, with their source, are in average KiwiSaver balance by age.
