Who Is SBS Bank?
SBS Bank is a member-owned mutual bank: there are no external shareholders, and profits are reinvested in the business or returned to members.
SBS Bank’s branches are mostly in the South Island, with some in the North Island such as Tauranga. Its KiwiSaver scheme is available nationally.
Fund Range
SBS Wealth’s fund range does not include a plain “Growth” fund. Its two highest-growth options are named High Growth and Focused Growth, both classified in the “Aggressive” risk category on Sorted Smart Investor:
| Fund | Risk category | Fee (per Sorted Smart Investor) | 5-yr return (to 30 June 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Growth | Aggressive | 1.24% | 8.83% |
| Focused Growth | Aggressive | 1.21% | No 5-yr data: launched 28 April 2025 |
Sorted says Aggressive funds typically hold from 90% to 100% growth assets, against 63% to 90% for the Growth category, so their returns should be compared with other Aggressive funds rather than with growth funds. The scheme’s statement of investment policy (August 2026) lists four funds, High Growth, Focused Growth, Income and Cash, plus a Lifestages option that adjusts your allocation to the funds by age; check Sorted for their current fees and returns.
Fees
At 1.24%, SBS Wealth’s High Growth fund costs about $620 a year on $50,000 and $1,240 on $100,000; at 1.21%, Focused Growth costs about $605 and $1,210. Sorted Smart Investor puts the average fee for aggressive-category funds at 0.84% (shown for a $40,000 balance). Check the PDS for any member fee on top.
For other providers’ fees side by side, see the KiwiSaver fund fees comparison.
Performance
SBS Wealth’s High Growth Fund returned 8.83% a year after fees and tax over the 5 years to 30 June 2026 (source: Sorted Smart Investor). Its newer Focused Growth fund (launched April 2025) has no 5-year record yet. Past returns don’t predict future returns, and a fund close to 100% growth assets can also fall further in a downturn. For other funds over the same five years, see KiwiSaver fund returns.
Mutual Ownership
SBS’s mutual structure means there are no external shareholders to pay. Its KiwiSaver fees (1.21% to 1.24% on the higher-growth funds) are set by SBS Wealth like any other provider’s, so ownership structure on its own doesn’t tell you what a fund costs: compare the fee in the fund update.
