Government Benefit Payment Dates New Zealand 2026

Updated

Work and Income pays NZ Super fortnightly and main benefits such as Jobseeker Support weekly, and Inland Revenue pays Working for Families weekly, fortnightly or as a lump sum. Missing a payment date or expecting money that hasn’t arrived can cause real hardship — this guide explains when each payment is made and what to do if yours is late.

Quick answer

NZ Super is paid fortnightly on a Tuesday; Jobseeker Support, Sole Parent Support and Supported Living Payment are paid weekly. Working for Families is paid by IRD weekly, fortnightly or as a lump sum after the tax year, as you choose. Best Start is paid by IRD as one of the Working for Families payments.

How NZ Benefit Payments Are Scheduled

Work and Income does not pay all clients on the same day. Jobseeker Support, Sole Parent Support and Supported Living Payment are paid weekly, and NZ Super is paid fortnightly on a Tuesday. The specific date rotates fortnightly.

To find your exact payment dates:

  • Log in to MyMSD (my.msd.govt.nz) — the Work and Income client portal
  • Call 0800 559 009 (Work and Income)
  • Check your original benefit setup letter

Jobseeker Support Payment Dates

Jobseeker Support is paid weekly, not fortnightly. Your official pay day is a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, and it stays the same once set. Check MyMSD for your exact dates.

Working for Families — Payment Dates

Working for Families tax credits (Family Tax Credit, In-Work Tax Credit, Minimum Family Tax Credit) are usually paid by IRD. Some people who get a main benefit can instead have them paid by Work and Income.

  • Weekly or fortnightly payments: You can choose to get WFF paid weekly or fortnightly
  • Lump sum after the tax year: You can instead take your whole entitlement as a lump sum after the end of the tax year (31 March), which avoids the risk of an overpayment to repay

To update your Working for Families payment schedule, log in to myIR at ird.govt.nz.

Best Start Payment Dates

Best Start (up to $77 a week, from 1 April 2026) is paid by IRD as one of the Working for Families payments, which you can choose to receive weekly, fortnightly or as a lump sum after the tax year. If you already get Working for Families, tell IRD about your new child; if not, register for Working for Families first.

Paid Parental Leave is administered by IRD:

  • Payments are made fortnightly directly to the primary carer’s bank account
  • Payments begin after IRD processes your application and sends your notice of entitlement, which lists your payment dates
  • If you’re an employee, you can choose a start date up to 6 weeks before the due date, or earlier in some cases (for example if your employer agrees or a health practitioner certifies you should start early)

Winter Energy Payment Dates 2026

The Winter Energy Payment is an automatic top-up to NZ Super and core benefits during winter. It requires no application.

Period Weekly rate Who receives it
1 May – 1 October 2026 $20.46/week (single, no dependants) Automatically
1 May – 1 October 2026 $31.82/week (couple or dependants) Automatically

Payments are added automatically to your other regular payments (weekly or fortnightly), so you will see a higher amount from May to October.

Public Holidays — Payment Date Changes 2026

When a regular payment day falls on a public holiday, Work and Income typically pays early, on the Friday or Saturday before the holiday weekend, and posts the changes for each holiday:

Public holiday 2026 Date Effect on payments

What to Do If a Payment Is Late

  1. Check MyMSD — confirm your expected payment date and bank account details
  2. Check your bank — processing times vary from bank to bank, and a payment can show the night before
  3. Call Work and Income: 0800 559 009 (Mon–Fri 7am–6pm, Sat 8am–1pm); if you get NZ Super or Veteran’s Pension, call 0800 552 002 (same hours)
  4. For IRD payments: call 0800 227 773 for Working for Families and Best Start, or 0800 767 287 for paid parental leave, or message via myIR

If you get a main benefit or pension and have an essential or emergency cost you can’t pay another way, Work and Income may be able to give you an Advance Payment of Benefit, which you pay back.
