Flick Electric was a New Zealand electricity retailer best known for passing wholesale “spot” power prices through to households. In 2025 its owner, Z Energy (part of Ampol), sold Flick’s customers and brand to Meridian Energy, and Flick’s customers moved to Meridian.
Flick is no longer an independent power company. Meridian Energy agreed on 13 May 2025 to take on all Flick and Z Energy branded electricity customers, Flick's hedge book and the Flick brand, for NZ$70 million. If you were a Flick customer, you are now with Meridian unless you switched. To find the cheapest plan for your address, compare on Powerswitch.
What Happened to Flick Electric
- The deal: Meridian announced on 13 May 2025 that it would “take on all Flick and Z Energy branded electricity customers, the existing Flick hedge book and the Flick brand”. The price was NZ$70 million.
- Size: Flick had 1.81% of the market by connections (ICPs), about 41,000 customers, most of them households. The deal lifted Meridian’s share to about 18%.
- Spot pricing had already faded: Flick was founded on wholesale spot pricing, but it moved away from wholesale pricing to a narrower offering after wholesale electricity prices rose.
What It Means If You Were a Flick Customer
Your account moved to Meridian. Meridian’s plans and prices apply, so it’s worth checking whether your current plan still suits how you use power. You can switch retailer at any time on a plan without a fixed term; if you’re on a fixed-term plan, check for a break fee first.
Spot Pricing in NZ Now
On a spot-price plan, your unit rate follows the wholesale market, which changes every 30 minutes: cheap overnight and when renewable generation is high, expensive at winter peaks and in dry years. Flick was the best-known spot-price retailer, so check Powerswitch for any spot-price or time-of-use plans on offer at your address.
