New Zealand’s cost of living has shifted significantly over the past decade: the national median rent for new tenancies rose from $390 a week in July 2016 to $590 in July 2026 (Tenancy Services bond data). Housing remains the dominant expense for most households, and the median new tenancy in Auckland was $640 a week in July 2026. This cluster covers everything from city-specific monthly budgets to wage benchmarks, grocery costs, and the NZ vs Australia comparison.
