How to Maximise NZ Loyalty Programmes: Stack Club+, Everyday Rewards and Airpoints

How to Maximise NZ Loyalty Programmes

NZ’s loyalty landscape has shrunk. Flybuys closed at the end of 2024, AA Smartfuel ended on 31 January 2024, and Countdown’s Onecard was replaced by Woolworths Everyday Rewards on 1 February 2024. Stacking now comes down to three layers: your supermarket’s own programme, fuel rewards built into it, and the card you pay with.

Quick answer

Scan Club+ at New World, Pak'nSave and Four Square (and at Z and Caltex), scan Everyday Rewards at Woolworths, and pay with a rewards credit card you clear in full each month. That's the whole stack now: Flybuys, AA Smartfuel and Onecard no longer exist.

The Current Stack

Where you shop Scan Pay with
New World, Four Square Club+ (earn Club+ dollars and a fuel discount) A rewards or Airpoints credit card
Pak’nSave Club+ (spend Club+ dollars; fuel discount) A rewards or Airpoints credit card
Woolworths Everyday Rewards (1 point per $1; 2,000 points = $15 voucher) A rewards or Airpoints credit card
Z, Caltex Club+ card scans here A rewards or Airpoints credit card
BP Redeem Everyday Rewards vouchers here A rewards or Airpoints credit card

Credit card rewards only make sense if you pay the balance in full: interest wipes out the rewards many times over.

Getting the Most From Each Programme

Club+ (Foodstuffs): Club+ dollars are earned on qualifying shops at New World and Four Square and can be spent at all three Foodstuffs banners or converted to Airpoints. Check the weekly Club+ picks and member deals before you shop.

Everyday Rewards (Woolworths): the base return is about 0.75% ($15 per $2,000 spent). “Boost” offers raise it on selected products, but check those products aren’t cheaper at another supermarket before buying for the points.

Credit cards: see Airpoints credit card comparison and rewards credit cards for current earn rates and fees; a card’s annual fee can cancel out its rewards on modest spending.

Avoiding Loyalty Programme Fatigue

  • Don’t choose a pricier supermarket to earn a particular currency: price differences between chains usually outweigh loyalty returns.
  • Don’t spend more to hit a bonus threshold.
  • Redeem regularly, so points and vouchers don’t sit unused.
